Biennial Fragrant Rose Competition

Biennial Fragrant Rose Competition

8, 9, 10 June 2018

The city of Nantes and the French Society of Roses have organized, once every two years since 1991, at the rose garden in the floral park of La Beaujoire, the only competition of fragrant roses that exists in the world.
" Faced with the rumor, often too widespread, that fragrant roses no longer exist, we needed a special showcase dedicated to the examination of roses from fragrant gardens, collected from all around the world. In 1998, at the inauguration of the rose garden in the Floral Park of La Beaujoire, the French Society of Roses proposed that the City of Nantes create, on this privileged site, an international competition of fragrant roses. Thus, since 1991, a special wall constructed facing the Erdre river, encircled by cut stones and wrought iron, has welcomed the Biennial International Competition of the Fragrant Rose, the only rose competition where a panel of professional perfumers weigh in "
Armand Zinsch President of the French Society of Roses

A technical panel and a panel of international perfumers : For two seasons, a technical jury considers the candidates and notes their morphological and cultural characteristics. In 4 tours, there are at least 320 notes that are attributed for each variety and the average constitutes the technical note. The selection process is harsh, notes from 6 to 10 are eliminated, as only the varieties having triumphed from this selection are submitted to the panel of the "Great Noses," composed of great international perfumers. This panel presides over the competition just one time to determine the quality and intensity of the fragrance and to determine the two award winners.
